Introducing OptiClear XL IPL: Expanding Dry Eye Treatment Options
We're pleased to introduce OptiClear XL IPL, the latest addition to the Grafton Optical dry eye portfolio.
Designed for the treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) associated with evaporative dry eye disease, OptiClear XL combines established IPL technology with advanced cooling and ergonomic design, providing eye care professionals with an additional treatment option for their dry eye patients.
Understanding Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
The Meibomian glands play an essential role in maintaining a healthy tear film, producing the oils and lipids that help prevent excessive tear evaporation. When these glands become blocked, inflamed or dysfunctional, the lipid layer of the tear film can be compromised, leading to tear film instability and increased evaporation.
Addressing Meibomian gland function is therefore an important part of managing evaporative dry eye disease.
How Can IPL Help?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) has been used in dermatology for many years and is also used in the treatment of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
IPL delivers controlled pulses of light to the skin, where light energy is absorbed by chromophores including oxyhaemoglobin. This is thought to help coagulate abnormal superficial blood vessels associated with inflammation.
The heat generated during treatment may also help warm Meibomian gland secretions and facilitate gland expression, supporting the management of MGD-associated evaporative dry eye.
Introducing OptiClear XL
OptiClear XL has been designed with both the practitioner and patient in mind, combining IPL technology with features that support precise and comfortable treatment.
Advanced Cooling Technology
The system incorporates water cooling, forced-air cooling and semiconductor local cooling. Its cooled sapphire applicator tip helps protect the skin during treatment and minimise superficial thermal irritation.
Ergonomic Applicator
The compact handpiece provides excellent visibility of the treatment area, with a 4.2cm² treatment spot designed for precise and efficient coverage.
Dedicated OptiClear XL Mode
A dedicated treatment mode provides gradual heat build-up, helping to increase patient comfort compared with standard treatment delivery.
No Disposable Treatment Tips or Cartridges
OptiClear XL offers the benefit of an exchangeable handpiece rated for approximately one million pulses, without the need for disposable treatment tips or cartridges. Coupling gel is used during treatment.
60-Month Warranty
The complete system is supplied with a 60-month warranty.
Incorporating IPL into Your Dry Eye Services
OptiClear XL provides an opportunity for practices to expand their dry eye treatment offering.
The treatment protocol involves applying IPL to the facial treatment area below the eyes and across the nose, followed by Meibomian gland expression.
Treatment typically involves a course of sessions, with the number and frequency determined by the manufacturer's protocol and the patient's individual clinical needs. Follow-up or maintenance treatment may be considered depending on response.
IPL can therefore form part of a wider dry eye management approach alongside assessment, lid hygiene and other appropriate treatments.
Explore the Business Case for Your Practice
Introducing a new treatment service is both a clinical and commercial decision.
To help practices assess the potential financial opportunity, Grafton Optical has developed an online OptiClear XL Business Case Calculator.
This allows practices to explore potential treatment revenue based on their own assumptions and estimated patient numbers.
